The word "mother" refers to the natural female parent of an offspring. In the case of humans the mother carries her child (which is called first an embryo, and then a fetus) in the womb. This gestation occurs until the fetus is sufficiently developed to be born after a 9 month period. The mother then goes into labour and gives birth. Once the child is born, the mother produces milk in a process called lactation to feed the child.
"The Mothers" also refers to a UK "mother only" punk band who play their own original songs that celebrate the joys and frustrations of being a mum. The band's drummer, Izzy, had the idea of forming the band after she had given birth to twin babies in December 2002. The band met regularly for a gestation period of exactly nine months before playing their first gig at the Victoria Inn, Derby.
"100 Mothers" was the title given to an exhibition by the acclaimed modern day artist, Harry Pye. For the exhibition he asked 100 artists (50 men and 50 woman) to paint a portrait of their own mothers.
Many of us celebrate Mother's Day annually. It is a day dedicated to honouring mothers and is celebrated on various days in many places around the world. Mothers often receive gifts on this day.
